In this tutorial you will discover a detailed guide on how to useDriver Uninstaller (DDU)to completely and safely remove the video card drivers from your system. The use of DDU is highly recommended to prevent software conflicts, annoying framerate (FPS) or system crashes (BSoD) caused by residual files and registry keys left by previous graphic driver installations.
Responsibility Note:The author assumes no responsibility for any malfunctions resulting from incorrect execution of the procedure. Proceed at your own risk. Please note that the use of this tool will reset all custom profiles in the control panel of your GPU: you will then need to manually reconfigure parameters such as NVIDIA SLI, AMD Crossfire, color profiles and monitor refresh frequencies (Hz).
What is DDU?
Driver Uninstaller (DDU)is a deep cleaning utility that allows you to radically delete graphic driversAMD (ATI), NVIDIA and Intel, including Realtek audio drivers. DDU's strength is the ability to leave no trace in your operating system, removing registry keys, hidden folders and driver store files. As time passes, the accumulation of these residual files can generate serious compatibility problems, preventing the installation of new updates or degrading PC performance. Thanks to DDU, you can restore a clean environment and solve the most common anomalies related to your video card.
Preparation for use of DDU
Before starting the uninstall process, it is essential to prepare the Windows environment and download the necessary files in advance so as not to remain without the driver when restarting.
Step 1: Download GPU or audio drivers
The very first step is to download the latest version of the drivers for your specific graphics card and operating system, directly from the manufacturer’s official portal.Caution: limited to downloading the file, do not start the installation right now.
Here are the official links for secure driver download:
- Driver NVIDIA: www.nvidia.com/Download/index.aspx
- Driver AMD (ATI): support. amd.com/en-us/download
- Intel Driver: https://downloadcenter.intel.com/
Note:If you use a pre-assembled computer or a laptop (brand like HP, Dell, Lenovo, etc.), you may need to withdraw the drivers directly from the support site of the PC manufacturer. Some OEM video cards have custom hardware IDs that require specific drivers to work properly, although it is a rare occurrence in modern desktop PCs.
Step 2: Download DDU
After saving video drivers on your PC, download DDU from the developer's official website (Wagnard):
- Official DDU download: https://www.wagnardsoft.com/display-driver-uninstaller-ddu-
We recommend always downloading the latest DDU release, as the software receives constant updates to stay compatible with the latest architecture changes in Windows and GPU drivers.
Step 2.5: Disconnect from the Internet (Windows only 10/11)
On Windows 10 and Windows 11 operating systems it is essential to disconnect the PC from the Internet (by installing the Ethernet cable or disabling the Wi-Fi). This shortcut blocks Windows Update, preventing it from downloading and automatically installing outdated or generic video drivers in the middle of your cleaning. Alternatively, DDU integrates an internal option to temporarily inhibit this behavior of Windows Update.
DDU execution
With ready files and disabled internet connection, we can get in touch with the cleaning operation.
Step 3: Extract and execute DDU
Double-click the executable you just downloaded to extract files to a folder you choose (make sure it is on a local drive and not on a network drive). For convenience, we suggest you create a folder called “DDU” directly on your desktop.
Finish the extraction, open the folder and start the applicationDriver Uninstaller display.
At the first start, the DDU interface will show a pop-up recommending you run the software inProvisional mode (Safe Mode). Although technically optional, starting the utility in this mode is highly recommended to ensure deep removal without interference from Windows active services.
- How to start your PC in Provisional Mode:Click on ‘OK’ in the initial pop-up. Go to the top left menu and select ‘Options’. Scroll down and check out the entry ‘Enable Safe Mode dialog box’. Close DDU and reopen it. On the new start, from the drop-down menu select “Provisional Mode (Recommended)” and press the “Reboot in Safe Mode” button. The computer will restart in the protected environment and DDU will open automatically.
- Tip 1:Use the “Enable Safe Mode dialog” feature only if you already know how to access Safe Mode using standard Windows methods. This prevents the risk of being trapped in a boot loop in temporary mode in case of forgotten PIN passwords.
- Tip 2:If you choose to use DDU in normal mode (not recommended), make sure at least to close any running program in advance (web browsers, video games, clients like Steam, editing software, etc.).
Configuration of DDU options
Before pressing the cleaning button, it is useful to configure some preferences within the program to maximize the recovered disk space.
Recommended options for maximum cleaning
Open the menuOptions. We strongly recommend that you check the directory removal boxesC:\NVIDIAandC:\AMD. These folders are used by old installers to disappear files before setup; once drivers are operational, their content becomes simple digital garbage that can be deleted to free valuable space.
Complete the configuration, simply close the options window to return to the main screen.
Driver removal
We have reached the crucial stage: the elimination of drivers from the system.
Select the driver to remove
On the right side of the main interface, you will find a drop-down menu. Use it to select the device type (Audio or GPU) and the driver manufacturer you want to extinguish (AMD, NVIDIA or Intel).
Important case:If you have previously replaced an AMD video card with a NVIDIA (or vice versa) without formatting Windows, you will have to run DDU twice. First remove the drivers of the previous brand (eg. AMD), then repeat the operation for the current brand (e.g. NVIDIA). This eliminates all possible latent software conflict at the root.
Generally, Intel's integrated video card drivers (Intel HD Graphics, Iris Xe) live peacefully with dedicated cards. However, orphan files of AMD on a NVIDIA PC may cause serious scratches and calis of performance in video games.
Choice of cleaning mode
The left column features three main action buttons:
- Clean and restart (Recommended):Permanently delete selected drivers and automatically restart the PC. It is the perfect option if you are running a standard cleaning to install a more up-to-date version of the drivers on the same video card.
- Clean and NOT restart:Useful only if you need to uninstall the drivers of multiple manufacturers. For example, if you click this item you can clean AMD, change the selection from the drop-down menu on NVIDIA, also clean and only eventually restart the PC manually.
- Clean and turn off:Removes drivers and stops the system. Choose this entry if you are using DDU as a preparation to open your PC case and physically install a new graphics card.
- Option Legacy (Only NVIDIA):In the younger versions of DDU, you will find the option“Remove the GeForce Experience Display Driver Installation Cache/ Files”. It is used to delete temporary files generated by the NVIDIA hub, often recovering over 600MB of disk space.
Starting the removal process
- Select the brand of your GPUfrom the drop-down menu on the right.
- Click on ‘Clean up and Reboot’to start the automated process.
Do not scare yourself if the flicker screen changes resolution or becomes black for a couple of seconds: it is the normal behavior of Windows when the display driver is arrested and removed. The entire operation will last a few moments, depending on the speed of your SSD or hard drive.
After completion, if you have selected options that do not provide automatic restart, you will see a confirmation message appear. Press ‘Yes’ to exit the program safely.
After rebooting the PC (which will now work with the Microsoft Basic Display Adapter at low resolution), you will be ready to install thenew official GPU driversthat you had downloaded in Step 1. Only at the end of the new installation you can reactivate the Internet connection.
Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) about DDU
Is it mandatory to start DDU in Safe Mode?
Although utility can also work in standard environment, use in Safe Mode (Safe Mode) is highly recommended. This limited Windows environment prevents services related to the video card to activate, allowing DDU to delete log files and system folders that would otherwise be “in use” and impossible to delete, thus ensuring 100% cleanliness.
Will DDU use my video games or personal files?
Absolutely not. Display Driver Uninstaller is an extremely targeted software: it only intervenes on system files, libraries and registry keys related to graphic drivers (AMD, NVIDIA, Intel) and audio. All your personal documents, software installed and video games will remain perfectly intact and secure.
How long should I use Display Driver Uninstaller?
You do not need to use DDU for every single monthly driver update. The use of this tool is recommended only on specific occasions: when you physically replace your video card with a different brand (e.g. from AMD to NVIDIA), or when you start to encounter graphic problems such as visual artifacts, visually viewed framerate drops, or sudden blocks and reboots of the PC (Blue Screen) linked to the video compartment.
