How to Enable Automatic Dark Mode on Windows 11
Windows 11 doesn't switch themes automatically by default. Learn how to use PowerToys Light Switch or Auto Dark Mode to sync with sunrise and sunset.

On this page
The confusion arises because Windows does have a schedule, but it’s for Night light, which shifts screen colors toward the warmer end to reduce eye strain in the evening. This is something else entirely: it doesn’t affect the interface theme, which remains light even at midnight.
Let’s start with manual settings, then move on to the two automatic solutions and how to choose between them.
How to change the theme manually #
The starting point is Settings → Personalization → Colors, where the Choose your mode option offers three choices:
- Light: everything light, system and apps.
- Dark: everything dark.
- Custom: choose different themes for Windows (taskbar, Start menu, Notification Center) and your apps.
Custom mode is more useful than it seems: many people keep the taskbar dark and the apps light, because documents are easier to read on a white background.
Light Switch, the PowerToys module #
PowerToys is a collection of free utilities developed by Microsoft for Windows. It’s the most direct route, since it comes from the creators of the operating system.
Install PowerToys from the Microsoft Store or from the official release page on GitHub. Via command line:
winget install --id Microsoft.PowerToys --source winget.Open the PowerToys settings and toggle Light Switch in the list of modules.
In the module page, choose your scheduling mode:
- From sunset to sunrise, calculated based on your location;
- Fixed times, if you prefer to decide yourself—for example, dark from 7 PM to 7 AM;
- Follow Night light, to align the theme with the schedule already set in Windows;
- Off, if you only want the manual shortcut.
If you choose sunset, enter your coordinates manually or enable location services: without one of these, the module won’t know what time the sun sets in your area.
Under Apply dark mode to, decide whether the change applies to the system, apps, or both.

There are two convenient details. You can set a minute offset to trigger the change earlier or later relative to sunrise and sunset, and you can assign a keyboard shortcut to switch themes on the fly when automation isn’t what you want—for example, in a very bright room. The shortcut also works even when scheduling is disabled.
If you also use the PowerToys Awake module (Note: original text says “Power Display”, but context implies PowerToys utility), you can link each theme to a monitor profile: brightness, contrast, and screen color temperature will change along with the theme.
Light Switch official documentationAuto Dark Mode, the open-source alternative #
It has existed much longer than Light Switch and offers many more options. You can download it for free from the Microsoft Store or the project page on GitHub, and it can also be installed via winget install autodarkmode. It works on Windows 11 and Windows 10 (version 22H2 and later).
Configuration starts from the Time tab: choose fixed times, sunset to sunrise using your location detected by Windows, or manually entered coordinates (then click Apply coordinates). This also includes a minute offset, with separate settings for switching to light and dark modes.

Beyond scheduling, it can do several things that Light Switch cannot:
- change the desktop background along with the theme, using one image for day and another for night;
- change the accent color of the interface and the mouse pointer;
- do not change themes while gaming, to avoid stutters or windows flashing in the middle of a match;
- switch to dark mode when you unplug your laptop from power;
- use the ambient light sensor, if your device has one;
- manage Office separately, as it has its own theme and doesn’t always follow Windows;
- run custom scripts at every change to control other programs.
For websites, developers recommend pairing it with Dark Reader, the extension for Chrome, Firefox, and Edge that darkens pages that don’t have their own dark theme.

In the general settings, keep Run at startup and update checks enabled: if the program doesn’t launch with the system, the switch won’t trigger.
In exchange, you get a denser interface and an extra program to keep updated. If you just want your theme to follow sunset, Light Switch is more than enough.

If the automatic switch doesn’t trigger #
The theme doesn’t change at the scheduled time. At sunset, make sure location is enabled in Settings → Privacy & security → Location, or enter your coordinates manually. Without a location, the time cannot be calculated. With Auto Dark Mode, also check that the program starts with Windows.
Only part of the interface changes. This depends on the setting that decides whether the theme applies to the system, apps, or both: double-check this in the module page.
Some programs stay light. Not all apps follow the Windows theme: many professional programs have their own separate settings, and older ones simply don’t have a dark theme.
The theme changes but already open windows do not. This happens with some apps that only read the theme upon startup: close them and reopen them.
FAQ #
Will Windows 11 have built-in automatic theme switching? #
Not for now: Microsoft has chosen to offer it via PowerToys instead of in system settings, and no dates for integration have been announced. Today, to automate your theme, you need one of the two programs from this guide.
Can Auto Dark Mode and Light Switch coexist? #
You can install both, but do not run them at the same time: both try to change the theme, which results in double changes or strange behavior. Pick one and disable the other.
Does automatic switching slow down games or consume resources? #
No, these are small services that wait for the scheduled time and change a single value twice a day. The impact on your processor and memory is minimal. If you want to prevent the switch from happening during a game, Auto Dark Mode has a specific option to delay it.
Is it possible to change the wallpaper along with the theme? #
With Auto Dark Mode, yes, via the Personalization tab, using one image for day and another for night. Light Switch currently only changes the system and app themes: if changing your wallpaper is important to you, that is the main reason to choose Auto Dark Mode.
Is dark mode better for your eyes? #
It helps in the dark by reducing the contrast between the screen and the room, which is why switching in the evening makes sense. In bright light, however, many find light text on a dark background harder to read: that’s why it’s better to alternate between the two themes instead of keeping one fixed all day long.
