To write in color in the Clash of Clans clan chat, wrap your text between <c#> and </c>, replacing the hash symbol with the color number. A green message is written like this: <c3> Testo del messaggio </c>. The closing tag is always </c>, without a number.

It’s a trick that veterans have known for years and one that comes in handy especially for leaders and co-leaders: a colored notice won’t get lost among hundreds of troop request messages.

How to write them #

<c2> Attacco alle 21, presentatevi tutti </c>

When it “doesn’t work,” the problem is usually one of these:

  1. Incorrect closing tag. It must be closed with </c>, not </c2> or </c9>: if you include a number, the game won’t recognize the tag and will display it as plain text.
  2. Forgotten closing tag. Without </c>, the message might not be interpreted at all.
  3. Spaces. Leaving a space after the opening tag and before the closing tag prevents the game from attaching the code to the first or last word.

The color applies until the closing tag. To use different colors for two parts of the same message, use two pairs of tags one after another.

Where they work and where they don’t #

These codes are designed for the clan chat and the Message Board. In player names, certain screens, and system messages, text may appear with the tags visible or it may be filtered out.

If a code appears written out in full instead of coloring the text, you either closed it incorrectly or that specific field does not support formatting.

An unofficial feature. Supercell has never officially documented this. It has worked for years, but an update could change or remove it without any announcement.

Use them well, without overdoing it #

Colors should be used to highlight a few important pieces of information. If every line on the Message Board has a different color, nothing stands out in the end and reading it becomes tiring.

A scheme that works well for organized clans:

  • red for urgent matters, such as war times or an imminent attack;
  • yellow for fixed rules and organizational announcements, such as donation rules;
  • green for confirmations and welcoming newcomers;
  • white for everything else—the majority of messages.
Leave the clan name alone. Filling it with codes and symbols might seem like a way to stand out, but it makes the clan much harder to find: people searching for it will type the name as they read it, without symbols. If you want to recruit, a clean name is better.

FAQ #

What is the code to write in red? #

<c2>, closing with </c>. For example: <c2> Guerra alle 20 </c>. If you want a darker red, almost burgundy, use <c9>.

Why isn’t the code coloring the text? #

Check your closing tag (it must be </c>, without a number), the spaces between the tags and the text, and where you are typing. If you’re unsure, try the same message in the clan chat: if it works there, then that specific field doesn’t support colors.

Does it work on both Android and iPhone? #

Yes, the codes are handled by the game and work the same way on Android, iPhone, and iPad, as long as the app is up to date.

Is there a risk of being banned for using color codes? #

No. You don’t need to modify the game or use external programs: just type text in the chat, and the game will interpret it automatically. No Supercell rules prohibit this.

Can I use multiple colors in the same message? #

Yes: close the first pair of tags and open another one immediately after. However, the result is often messy, and using two colors on a single line makes the message harder to read.

Could this feature disappear with an update? #

It could happen, precisely because it isn’t an official feature. For this reason, don’t rely on colors for anything essential, such as clan rules that can only be understood by seeing which line is red.
