Password Managers

A simple way to protect yourself from hacking when using your online accounts is to use a password manager in addition to antivirus software and a virtual private network for an additional security level.

If you are looking for a simple way to manage your online accesses, using one of the best password management options in this article can help you. As additional security level, consider using a physical security key and an online security suite for a full suite of digital defenses.

We all have many online accounts, but it is often easy to take the habit of reusing the same password for multiple sites and services. It might be convenient, but it also puts you in danger of a very real cybersecurity problem that could likewise affect your work and personal files.

Getting one of the best password management choices has never been so important, especially because more and more people are embracing a remote working life that divides time between home and office.

Dashlane

As one of the most popular password managers in the world, Dashlan is a password manager capable for a single device, able to store unlimited passwords (50 for a free account) in a secure deposit with multi-factor authentication, such as LastPass, can do much more than enter passwords for you; it can also store all types of information and automatically fill out modules with delivery addresses and contact details.

So far everything is fine, but Dashlane's premium service is even more impressive. Not only does it allow you to sync all your passwords on all your devices (both desktop and mobile), but it also monitors the dark web for data breaches and sends you custom alerts if any of your stored details appears in a batch of stolen data.

There is also secure file storage (ideal for scanned identity documents, insurance policies and receipts) and even a VPN to browse the Web more securely via Wi-Fi hotspots.

It’s no surprise that all this has a price and Dashlane’s premium plan is one of the most expensive options available, but extra services (as well as remote access to account and priority support) justify the cost.

Last step

LastPass password manager is easy to use, super safe, rich in functionality and offers both free and premium levels so you can choose the right option for you. No wonder it’s one of the most popular and wanted password managers available!

All data is stored using AES-256 bit encryption with PBKDF2 SHA-256 and salt hash to keep them safe, and this is not limited to passwords. You can also store credit card details and delivery addresses so that they can be entered automatically when you shop online, as well as encrypted notes, insurance policy details and much more.

The free version of LastPass is exceptional, but premium accounts have a very reasonable price and offer extra functionality: the ability to access apps on your phone. Very few password managers offer this and it could be valuable if you lose your phone, preventing people from accessing your emails and social media.

One of our favorite LastPass features is support for multi-factor authentication, which helps you protect yourself from phishing attempts by requiring an additional form of authorization to access your accounts, such as a code generated by a mobile app or scan of fingerprints. Although it's becoming more widespread, not all sites and services offer it yet, so having all your secure accesses in a secure deposit this way is a real advantage.

Keep in mind, however, that LastPass Free users will have to choose if they want their accounts on mobile or desktop devices, with the company that claims that it will include access only on unlimited devices of a type.

Nord

NordPass is part of the NordSec product suite that also includes NordVPN. Nordpass offers a very capable password manager with browser plug-ins for Chrome, Firefox, Edge, Opera, Brave and Safari, as well as desktop apps for Windows, macOS and Linux, as well as iOS and Android mobile devices. In addition, NodPass has a web vault that allows you to access all data on any desktop device through a browser.

In addition to storing encrypted passwords, NordPass may also suggest complex passwords and offer secure storage of credit card and bank data for faster payments on e-commerce websites.

With the premium edition, you can then sync this information to up to 6 devices per license. The free version only allows one, but you can try other premium features for 30 days.

Another positive aspect is that there is no limit to the number of passwords you can save, unlike others who have restrictions. The software is also constantly updated (as should be) with some new features, large or small that are. For example, the desktop app has recently achieved a good change in quality of life: a “change account” feature, which allows you to change accounts with just one click, provided you have multiple accounts, such as personal and business accounts.

Overall, however, NordPass is a highly capable password manager who does a little more than you would expect.

Kepper

There is no free version of Keeper password manager, but you can try it for 30 days before deciding whether to subscribe. Keeper Security gets a high score for offering support for unlimited devices.

As you would expect from a purely premium product, Keeper is one of the most sophisticated password managers in circulation. Not only does it offer plug-ins for all major browsers, as well as mobile apps for iOS and Android, it is also available as desktop apps for Windows, macOS and Linux. There is support for biometric authentication also on mobile devices and syncs your data to an unlimited number of devices.

As the paid version of Dashlane, Keeper will notify you if any of your passwords are displayed in a data breach. It will alert you even if one of your passwords is particularly weak or has been reused and will help you create effective replacements.

There is also a great family plan. This not only protects the access details of all your family members, but also allows you to share files securely between them and offers an encrypted messaging tool that is a solid alternative to WhatsApp if you prefer to avoid Facebook products.

1Password

1Password is a password manager that aims to provide protection not only to individuals or organizations, but also provides a shared password protection system for families. 1Password is proposed as the most beloved password manager in the world.

There are two main service provisions, one for individuals and their families, which allows a single user or family up to five people to use the 1Password service for protected access. There is also a business service that offers protection to those who work from home, as well as to teams and businesses in general.

In addition to providing everything above, 1Password protects you from violations and other threats, such as keyloggers and phishing attempts, and will only work with verified browsers.

The result is a very secure and competent password manager that covers both personal and business use, including homework, without compromising security.

LogMeOnce

LogMeOnce is a password management solution that offers multiplatform support, so regardless of the device used, desktop or mobile, passwords and accesses are still accessible as required.

Unusually, LogMeOnce eliminates the need for a main password by implementing additional security settings, so you can't be locked out of your account simply by forgetting your main password.

It is also a service that offers additional security features, which include the ability to encrypt and store your online accesses to facilitate accessibility.

However, instead of relying only on passwords, LogMeOnce also offers biometric options such as selfie, fingerprint, face ID as well as a PIN or password. The increase in the number of options means that you can apply different security levels to different accesses.

As with other password managers, LogMeOnce is designed to provide Single Sign On functionality, so once you have access to a service you should not expect to continue accessing the same service.

RoboForm

Roboform is another versatile password manager, with plug-in for all major browsers and mobile apps for both iOS and Android.

The free version is exceptional and provides you with a secure deposit for your accesses (though you also have the option to store your data only on your device if you prefer), a control tool to help you identify weak or duplicate passwords and a generator password to replace them with strong and unimaginable combinations of numbers, letters and special characters.

Unlike LastPass, RoboForm's free version does not sync your passwords to multiple devices. For this you will need a premium subscription, but prices are very reasonable. You will also have a number of other useful features, including the ability to share access safely, multi-factor authentication and priority 24/7 support.

Bitward

Bitwarden is an easy-to-use and highly secure open source software and includes almost everything individuals, teams and companies require in a password manager.

Bitwarden’s basic plans focus on password management, but also free plans include multi-device synchronization, optional automatic hosting and unlimited online storage space. Premium plans include reports on your passwords that highlight things like weak passwords and unprotected websites.

Pad-for plans include password management features of a wider workforce, with password sharing, fine-grain access control, user groups, two-step access and multi-factor authentication.

Bitwarden is not just one of the best free password managers available, it is so usable and full of features that could make some password managers fail at a fee.

mSecure

mSecure password manager covers all the essentials you need from the password management software. There is no limit to the number of entries you can store and the integrated categories allow you to store much more than passwords. All entries support custom fields and you can also separate voices in groups instead of simple tags.

The password generator included in mSecure works well, but it was not our favorite. There is no option to force him to produce man-readable words. Therefore, each password is a really random string which is difficult to type if you have not enabled automatic filling. In particular, you cannot even access the password generator without creating a new record in mSecure.

mSecure is a quality password manager for individuals, with customizable models and synchronization between devices. It is also very convenient and quite capable for most individual users. The only important thing missing is the safe sharing of the password for families and teams.

Zoho Vault

If you need to share passwords among team members, Zoho Vault offers the necessary granular control. The user management features, permissions and password criteria of Zoho Vault distinguish it from personal password managers and you can make batch changes to passwords with ease.

Zoho Vault can integrate with third-party business apps such as Gmail, Dropbox, Microsoft Active Directory and Microsoft 365. Business users can use Single Sign On (SSO) with cloud apps such as Salesforce and Slack and since Zoho Vault has an API, you can integrate it with any personal app.

Zoho Vault offers excellent security, accurate control over users and passwords and extraordinary third-party integrations. It is also inexpensive and customer support is one of the best we have seen in a password management service.

We do not recommend it especially for personal use since most of the features are team oriented, making the interface quite complex, but it is an exceptional password manager for organizations and companies.
