Minecraft has always had a fascinating look, but those simple 8×8 pixel textures become really spectacular when combined with dynamic real-time lighting, the shadows outlined with ray-tracing and the volumetric mist of a high quality shader package. Minecraft shaders have existed for many years and each offers something slightly different in an attempt to transform your worlds into breathtaking works of art.
Currently, there are more shader packages to choose from than ever and download them and install them became very simple. The difficulty lies in deciding which shader package to use, since unlike the texture packages for Minecraft, you cannot overlay shader packages to combine their effects. Some shaders focus more on lighting, others on the sea, and others on weather effects. Some are light, while others are mastodons that require high-level PCs to work at most settings.
AstaLex
AstraLex Shaders is a relatively recent shader package, derived from the popular BSL Shaders. What strikes from the beginning is the impressive and complete set of customization options of AstraLex Shaders, which allows you to adjust virtually every imaginable aspect, from specific tones of lighting to various post-processing effects. One of the favorite features is the effect of black bars that appears when you rig. It might seem like a little trick, but it quickly became one of the main strengths of this shader package.
AstraLex Shaders, already installed, offer an extraordinary beauty (after all, they are based on BSL). Everything looks sharp and vibrant, and the skies are beautiful, especially at night. Some users may not appreciate the constellations of stylized stars.
Beyond Belief
Beyond Belief Shaders is not particularly distinguished by the other Minecraft shaders on this list, although water is particularly fascinating. This package offers players a simple and pleasant balance between performance, customization and beauty.
Beyond Belief is based on SEUS v11, a precursor of the SEUS Renewed shaders mentioned later in the list, and shares with them different characteristics. However, Beyond Belief adds some additional settings to its basic shader package, including a nocturnal desaturation effect (which makes these shaders perfect for a midnight firework show in Minecraft) and a simple cel-shading effect.
BSL Shaders
The BSL Shaders are incredibly beautiful. This is the shader package to which you tend to return for personal survival worlds and for Minecraft servers. BSL Shaders are among the most popular in the world, and the reason is obvious. Every element, from the extraordinary depths of field to warm and clear lighting, from the beautiful reflections on water to the soft distant clouds, is absolutely sublime.
Thanks to the wide range of customization options available, BSL Shaders can work on a wide variety of machines. This package actually tends to work a bit better on high-end configurations than many other “reference” shaders in this list. However, nowadays, the competition for the title of best shader package for Minecraft is more fierce than ever, and BSL may no longer be the undisputed king, but one of several strong contenders.
Chocapic13’s
Here is a classic shader package whose name may be familiar to those who have never used shader for Minecraft. The venerable Chocapic13’s Shaders package is still one of the best available options, thanks to its lively yet sober style and the ability to work on many different hardware configurations without too much trouble.
For those who really try to test their machines with spectacular visual effects, this package will probably not be up to expectations. However, Chocapic13’s Shaders manages to create a more relaxing Minecraft atmosphere than most other tried shader packages. There is something extremely serene in this particular combination of swaying leaves, waves that sparkle gently and soft and delicate lighting.
Complementary
Complementary Shaders is a derivative of BSL Shaders, designed to offer users “the most trouble-free experience possible”. This package, compatible with many mods, boasts excellent performance and offers the same customization opportunities as BSL. The choice between BSL and Complementary depends solely on personal preferences. It’s a great option to show the latest buildings in Minecraft.
The shader package can be optionally matched to a Complementary Resource Pack, although it can be used with any desired resource package. Personally, I think it is fantastic even only with vanilla textures, and once again, this package is particularly impressive at night.
