# Best Minecraft Shaders and How to Install Them

For Minecraft Java shaders today, you no longer need OptiFine: **[Iris](https://modrinth.com/mod/iris) with [Sodium](https://modrinth.com/mod/sodium)** loads the same packs, runs the game faster, and arrives much sooner for new versions. These are two free mods that you can install in just a few minutes.

Shaders change the way Minecraft renders the scene: real shadows, water reflections, light filtering through leaves, and believable day/night cycles. They come at a performance cost, and how much depends heavily on the pack: some run on integrated graphics, while others will push a dedicated GPU to its limits.

## What you need before shaders

Two mods, installed in the `mods` folder together:

- **Sodium** rewrites the game's rendering engine and increases your frames per second even without shaders. On modest computers, the difference is night and day.
- **Iris** is the shader loader: it reads the same files `.zip` that were used with OptiFine.

Both require the **[Fabric](https://fabricmc.net/)** loader and can be downloaded from Modrinth or official sites. There are also versions for NeoForge, if you already play with mods from that ecosystem.

OptiFine still exists and works, but it arrives late to new game versions and conflicts with many recent mods. If you don't have a specific reason to use it, choose Iris.

## Recommended shaders

| Shader | Look | Required Hardware |
|--------|------|---------------------|
| [Complementary](https://www.complementary.dev/shaders/) | Balanced and polished, the most recommended overall | Mid-range graphics card |
| [BSL](https://modrinth.com/shader/bsl-shaders) | Warm colors, soft atmosphere | Mid-range graphics card |
| Nostalgia | Lightweight, respects the original style | Even integrated graphics |
| Rethinking Voxels | Advanced lighting, very realistic | Mid-range with some headroom |
| SEUS Renewed | High-end photorealism | High-end graphics card |
| AstraLex | Derived from BSL, tons of options, beautiful night skies | Mid-to-high range |
| Beyond Belief | Very realistic water, desaturated nights | Mid-range |
| Chocapic13's | Classic, relaxed atmosphere, lightweight versions | Even modest PCs |

**Complementary** is the right starting point for almost everyone: beautiful without overdoing it, well-optimized and compatible with many mods, featuring an options panel that lightens the load significantly without sacrificing visual quality. It has two styles, *Reimagined* and *Unbound*, and an optional matching texture pack.

**BSL** is a favorite for those seeking a warm atmosphere, with striking sunsets and more cinematic lighting; it's the pack many return to for survival gameplay and servers. In terms of performance, it costs about the same as Complementary.

**Nostalgia** is the answer for low-end computers: it adds subtle shadows and reflections while maintaining the look of the original game, running smoothly where others struggle.

**SEUS Renewed**: use this only with a powerful graphics card; on insufficient hardware, it won't just lag—it will be completely unplayable.

**AstraLex** is based on BSL and offers an enormous amount of options: even with the default settings, the colors are vibrant and the night sky is among the most beautiful.

**Beyond Belief** changes little of the classic aesthetic but features very realistic water and an effect that desaturates the night, similar to how the human eye perceives darkness.

**Chocapic13's** is a classic: it doesn't aim for photorealism, but provides a serene atmosphere with moving leaves, and includes lightweight versions that run even on modest PCs.

## If you have integrated graphics

It is possible, provided you have the right expectations. The recipe that works:

1. Install **Sodium** and play without shaders first: even like this, your frame rate will increase significantly.
2. Choose a lightweight shader like Nostalgia, Chocapic13's Lite version, or one of the "lite" packs from various authors.
3. Inside the shader options, lower the **shadow resolution** and disable water reflections: these are the two most demanding settings.
4. Keep your **render distance** between 8 and 12 chunks. This is the parameter that impacts performance more than any other.
5. If your laptop has a dedicated graphics card, check in **Settings** → **System** → **Display** → **Graphics** to ensure Minecraft (i.e., `javaw.exe`) is using it: it often defaults to integrated graphics by mistake.

> **Keep an eye on your FPS.** Press <kbd>F3</kbd> to see your frames per second while you change settings. Change one parameter at a time and watch the number: in two minutes, you'll understand what is heavy, better than any configuration found online.

## Step-by-step installation

1. Install the **[Fabric](/en/install-minecraft-mods-without-crashing/)** loader for your version of Minecraft.

2. Download the **Sodium** and **Iris** mods from the official websites of both projects, making sure to choose the files for your specific version.

3. Copy the two `.jar` files into the `mods` folder. On Windows, you can reach it by typing `%appdata%\.minecraft` into the File Explorer address bar.

4. Download the shader pack you're interested in: it remains a single `.zip` file and **should not be unzipped**.

5. Launch the game using the Fabric profile and go to **Options** → **Video Settings** → **Shader Packs**.

6. Click the button that opens the shaders folder, drop the `.zip` file inside, return to the game, and select it from the list.

It takes a few seconds the first time because the game needs to compile the effects. With <kbd>K</kbd> you can toggle shaders on and off on the fly, and with <kbd>O</kbd> you can open the list directly.

## Troubleshooting

**Stuttering or low FPS.** Reduce your render distance and shadow quality in the shader settings, or switch to a lighter pack.

**Black screen or broken textures.** Usually, this means your graphics drivers are outdated: update them from the manufacturer's website rather than through Windows Update.

**The shader doesn't appear in the list.** It was likely unzipped instead of being left in `.zip` format, or it ended up in the wrong folder.

**The game crashes on startup.** This happens if there is a version mismatch between Fabric, [Sodium](/en/best-minecraft-clients-comparison/), and Iris: they must all be for the same Minecraft version.

**The world is too dark at night.** This is intentional: many shaders make nights truly dark. You can usually find an option in the settings to increase minimum brightness.

## FAQ

### Do shaders work on Bedrock Edition?

Not these ones. Iris, Sodium, and the packs on this page are for Java Edition. However, as of June 2025, Bedrock features **Vibrant Visuals**, Mojang's official enhanced graphics, which includes lights, shadows, reflections, and volumetric fog: you can enable it via **Settings** → **Video** → **Graphics Mode** on consoles, PC, and supported mobile devices. Mojang has stated it will also arrive on Java, but there is no release date yet.

### Do I definitely need both Sodium and Iris?

The Iris installer includes Sodium automatically, so in that case, you only need the one. If you install them manually, ensure you use compatible versions: the Iris page always specifies which version of Sodium is required.

### Do shaders ruin your gameplay or saved worlds?

No, they only change the graphics and do not affect your save files. You can toggle them on and off whenever you want from the video settings, even while playing in an open world.

### How much do they impact performance?

Significantly: with a medium-quality shader, it's normal to lose half of your frames per second, and heavier packs will cause even more loss. For this reason, start with a lightweight pack and only move up if your computer can handle it.

### Is OptiFine still useful?

It remains useful for certain specific features, such as connected textures and some detailed graphics settings, or for older packs that require it. However, for connected textures on Fabric, there is Continuity. For shaders specifically, Iris and Sodium are faster and work with many more mods.
